Cindy Hodgson Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Where are you located?

I see clients entirely through telehealth, so we can meet from wherever you feel comfortable talking. I’m licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, which means you’ll need to be physically located in one of those states when we meet. (No logging on from your vacation in Florida or Colorado!)

How do I get started?

You can call or text me at (763) 248-2019 for a free 15-minute phone consultation or to set up an appointment. I’ll get back to you within 24 hours, Monday through Thursday.

How long is a typical session?

A typical session runs 45 to 55 minutes. Because in-session exposure work can require more time, I also offer 90-minute sessions for OCD treatment when it’s clinically beneficial.

What are your hours?

I see clients from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Do you take insurance?

I’ve chosen to run a fully private-pay practice, which means I don’t bill insurance or provide documentation for insurance reimbursement.

My goal is to provide therapy based on your needs and goals rather than insurance requirements regarding diagnosis, medical necessity, or treatment authorization. That keeps our focus on your care, without a third party involved in the decision-making.

Working outside of insurance also gives me the flexibility to recommend treatment that actually fits you. Whether you’re seeking support through a difficult life transition, wanting to strengthen relationships, or managing a diagnosed mental health condition, we decide together what our work looks like.

It also protects your privacy, since I’m not required to share your clinical information with an insurance company.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24-hour notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Without it, I charge a $50 missed-appointment fee.

What age range do you work with?

I provide individual therapy to adults, both women and men, and I’ve had the privilege of working with people from 18 to 80 years old.

What Therapy With Me Looks Like

What are therapy sessions like with you?

I give you space to verbally process what’s going on with you.

You’ll also find my approach is more directive than some therapists’. I teach skills and ask you to practice them between sessions.

My work relies largely on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and for OCD I use exposure and response prevention (ERP).

I see myself as a sounding board, teacher, coach, cheerleader, accountability partner, and encourager.

What is one misconception about therapy you’d love to clear up?

I wish people wouldn’t think, “I tried therapy and it didn’t work for me.”

No. You tried one type of therapy with one therapist, or maybe a few.

There are so many types of therapy and therapist personalities out there, and I believe every client can find the right fit.

What is your educational background?

I earned a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in 2016 from Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minnesota (near St. Paul).

Since then, I’ve provided Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (ARMHS) and in-home therapy through Pathways Counseling Center in St. Paul, and in-office and telehealth therapy through Threads of Hope Counseling in Maple Grove, Minnesota.

A Little About Me

Coffee or tea?

Definitely coffee, especially lattes, mochas, and cold brew! I’m drinking a pistachio mocha as I write this, and I’ll probably have some kind of coffee drink with me when we meet.

Dogs, cats, or both?

I love all animals, but dogs are my favorite, especially furry lap dogs. Right now I have Barney, a rescue who’s thought to be a Yorkie mixed with some other kind of terrier.

Can I bring my pet to my virtual session?

Absolutely! I love “meeting” my clients’ pets.
